A little about us

Writers Retreat

a love story

A very warm welcome to our home.

The house was an old Welsh wool fulling mill built of local stone from Pen quarry, converted into living accommodation 100 years later in around the 1930s. From the medieval period, the fulling of cloth often was undertaken in a water mill known as a walk or tuck mill or, in Wales, a pandy.

In the cellars of the property, there are small living areas where the workers would have lived. Each has its own tiny fire are there are still some intricate wood carvings that were likely made by the workers.

As a family we bought the house having fallen in love with it when we moved to Rowen. There was a romance crossing the bridge over the Afon Roe to access it, the constant sound of the river and the birds, the privacy of the building nestled in the overgrown gardens. The neglect of the property meant we could put our personalities and ideas into the design to bring the house back to life. It felt like a rescue mission.

The themes were all very much inspired by the flowers and fauna of Snowdonia National Park and the association with Conwy’s nautical heritage. We wanted everything to have the same level of attention to detail whether that be a door handle or a showerhead.

We hope you have a wonderful stay,

The Murphy Family
